Bookbinding Companies
You have a copy of a book whose covers are worn out - or, whose pages are falling out. Or, it could be that you have issues of magazines or journals lying or sitting around loose and would like to have them bound together. If either one of these is the case, you might want to consider obtaining the services of a good bookbinder.
Be aware that in most cases you will not save money by having a book rebound over purchasing a good, used copy of that book (if one is available) or even over purchasing a new copy of that book (if it is still in print) - having bookbinding done is expensive (no doubt this is due to the fact that it is so labor-intensive to do it)! But, maybe you can't find a new or used copy of that book to replace it, or for some other reason just want to keep the copy that you have (because of sentimental reasons, notes that you have written in it, etc.). In that case, if you want that copy of the book to be good and usable, you'll need to have it rebound, or at least repaired.
A member of the church of Christ, Cecil Cox of Cox Printing and Bookbinding of Russellville, Alabama, did some book rebinding for me several times. Brother Cox's prices were low and he did superb work. Unfortunately, bro. Cox has retired and no longer does this work for the public. The following, however, are some companies that I know of that currently do this kind of work, along with a comment or two about them.
1. Since his retirement, brother Cox has recommended Norris Bookbinding in Greenwood, Mississippi (107 North Stone Avenue, P.O. Box 305, Greenwood, MS 38930-0305, 1.888.213.2586 or 662.453.7424, norris@norrisbookbinding.com, www.norrisbookbinding.com) to me several times. They specialize in rebinding of Bibles, but they also bind other books, magazines, and church bulletins. I have never used Norris Bookbinding to do work for me, but bro. Cox's recommendation of them says a lot about them in my book (no pun intended :-) ). Take note: their work does not come cheap! But this seems like the bookbinder to use if you absolutely want the highest-quality job done.
2. I had Specialty Bookbinding of Gadsden, Alabama (709 Magnolia Avenue, Gadsden, AL 35903, 1.800.631.5015 or 1.256.546.1310, info@specialtybookbinding.com, www.specialtybookbinding.com) rebind a Bible for me once. I was very pleased with their work - and the cost was pretty reasonable, the best that I remember. As far as I know, they only rebind and restore Bibles, however.
3. Brother James P. Needham runs a bookbinding business called Bulwarks Book Bindary [sic] in Winter Park, Florida (1600 Oneco Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32789-1638, 407.628.2995, jpn10@juno.com, no Web site that I know of). His business card states, "Books hand bound and/or rebound; Antique books and Bibles restored; Bibles rebound in genuine leather". I had him to rebind a two-volume set of commentaries for me recently. His prices are low, relatively speaking.
4. I recently (as of 6/23/04) have learned of Sawyer Bookbinding (519 Jessamine Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32118, 386.253.1161, sawyerbinder@msn.com). They specialize in rebinding and restoring Bibles and antiquarian books. I have not used personally their services before nor do I personally know anyone who has, but I am pretty impressed by their credentials. Check them out at their Web site at www.sawyerbinder.com.
If you have information about other bookbinders, especially those that you have personally used, please send it to me. I will do some investigating for myself, and possibly include information about them on this Web page.
